J R Davis, Crockett won the Wythe Eye Associates 30 lap special Modified race on Saturday night at Wythe Raceway. Marion’s Morgan Widener kept the pressure on the smooth driving Davis but could not make the pass. Brandon McClure, Troutdale had his best finish of the year in third place followed by: R K Dix, Rural Retreat; Brandon Bentley, Wytheville, Mark Caudill, Atkins; Austin Brooks, Kingsport who also won the Wythe Eye Modified Trophy Race; Jason Powers, Marion; Cody Umberger, Rural Retreat; Dennis Jones, Galax; and Cole Hedrick, Wytheville.

 

The barn burner race of the night featured numerous drivers trying to win the R & C Super Street division 30 lap race. Those in the hunt were Michael Deskins, Tazewell; Dale Hancock, Atkins; Terry Sharp, Woodlawn;  Tony Parks, Stuart; Keith Griffitts, Sugar Grove and Jerry Dillow, Bluefield, WV.  Sharp’s night almost ended when his car impacted the safety tire barrier. It took the safety crew several minutes to free the from safety tire barrier. Sharp was getting ready to call it a night when fellow competitor Duke Bare looked over the car said it was still raceable. Sharp tighten his safety belts and started at the rear of the field. Up front three drivers Keith, Griffitts and Dillow were battling each other making numerous passes and some spinning and going to the rear of the field. At the finish line it was Dillow, Keith, Griffitts, Parks, Sharp, Randy Taylor, Chilhowie; Jess Doss, Abingdon; Cody Rhymer, Bristol, TN and Kevin Cox, Ceres. Wythe Raceway Technical inspector had the top three finishers do a teardown to look at specific components to see that they met the specifications. Dillow and Keith refused teardown and forfeited their finishing positions along with purse and points. Griffitts complied the teardown an was found to be in compliance with the regulations.

 

Jacob Harmon, Abingdon won the That’s My Dress KCAR race finishing in front of Amber Huffman, Chilhowie; Tanner Tate, Marion; Caroline King, Wytheville and Samantha Atwell, Rural Retreat.

 

Kayla Surber, Sugar Grove won her first UCAR race of the 2017 season by beating Hunter Reedy, Marion to the finish line. Third place went to Boomer Wilson, Rural Retreat followed by Austin Hedrick, Wytheville; Jacob Thomas, Marion; Brandon Hale, Swords Creek; Ethan Atwell, Wytheville; Will Hostetler, Rural Retreat; Jason Buchanan, Rural Retreat and Cody Perdue, Marion.

 

Pro Mini driver Travis Harden, Marion was first over points leader Kevin Atwell, Rural Retreat. Woodlawn’s Chuck Kinzer was third followed by Kevin Davidson, Bluefield, WV; Brad Carpenter, Lansing, NC; Tim Black, Princeton, WV; Timmy Thomas, War, WV and Tanner Cook, Max Meadows.

 

Saturday night will feature the Grayson Restaurant Vintage Modifieds and Sportsman races. These cars are from the 1930s up to 1972 models. They will run a 15 lap feature. Also on the card will be the Wythe Eye Modifieds, R & C Super Street, That’s My Dress KCAR, FASTRAK Late Models, UCAR and Pro Mini.

 

 General admission is $12; Seniors and Military $8, Youth $5 with Kids free. Hot laps will start around 8 pm with races to follow.
