Dale McDowell wins the $10,000.00 Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals
Dale McDowell drove to a $10,000 victory in a 53-lap event that kicked off the 14th edition of the Ray Cook-founded Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series (presented by Sunoco and Tennessee RV Supercenter) tonight (July 14) at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Va.
McDowell shared the front row in the 31-car field with Brandon Overton, and the pair spent the first 28 laps playing a cat-and-mouse game, with McDowell using the middle lane and Overton mostly exploring the high side at the massive half-mile oval.
Overton made some heady advances at various stages and was able to pull closer as the duo negotiated lapped traffic, but Overton fell from the event due to mechanical failure and finished 25th.
That left McDowell to finish his journey unmolested, and he was strong on a late-race restart with three laps remaining to claim the victory over Vic Hill, Eric Wells, Ross Bailes and Casey Roberts.
Shanon Buckingham, who brought out the final yellow when he suffered a flat tire while running second in the closing laps, pitted for a replacement and placed 17th on the lead circuit.
