You tube video of Kenny Peeples exiting wrecked car. Talked with Kenny Sunday and he said that he was not sore yet. May have a fractured finger but driver's compartment, seat and belts worked.
When he saw that he was going to impact the wall head-on, he took his hands off of the steering wheel and put his arms across his chest. After the car stopped upside down, he cut the master switch off. He had a little trouble getting his safety belts off upside down. He made sure that he was braced so that he would not fall down and injure his neck. Then he released the belts before he released the sternum strap. The belts were loose but the sternum strap held him and he found it very hard to push himself up enough to release the strap.
DRIVERS learn from this and make sure that you know how to exit the car. Practice by keeping you eyes closed (you may be in a dark area) with all of you race gear on and seeing how long it takes you to get out if car is on fire. Have two plans on exiting the car, one if it is upside down and one if not upside down. Do not undo belts if no emergency - someone may not see you - stay buckled up.
1) Kenny did the right thing by taking his hands off of the steering wheel - no broken wrist or hand. 2) Cut off the master switch to reduce chance of fire. 3) Thought to brace himself so that he would not drop down. 4) Looked for his fire extinguisher but it had exited the car upon impact. Now he is considering a fire bottle system.
